Volunteer Voices: Newest Board Member Subrana Dhital

NCEF is very excited to welcome our newest board member: Subarna Dhital. Subarna is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He grew up in rural Nepal and is intimately familiar with the issues of childhood education in these areas. His recent work in Nepal has focused on quality of healthcare delivery, particularly pertaining to the experiences of the most underprivileged and powerless people. He brings to the board fresh memories of the plight of the powerless, challenges in navigating the prevailing practices to institute changes, and a pragmatic understanding of the scope and limits of volunteering efforts.

We sat down with Subarna for a quick interview.

How long have you volunteered for NCEF? What tasks did you help with?

I have volunteered for NCEF in the US since February 2017. My involvement has been in evaluating applications for scholarship.

Did you have other volunteer experience in the past?

My volunteer experience has been in the healthcare field. I worked in Nepal for 2.5 years after completing training in the US in 2012 (specialization in Internal Medicine and then further sub-specialization in Endocrinology). My efforts were primarily focused on understanding and improving the experiences of the most disadvantaged in the Nepali healthcare system.

What motivated you to step up your level of involvement with NCEF?

In volunteering endeavors, after the initial excitement of wrestling with the abstract for higher ideals, my experience has been that camaraderie is what sustains the efforts. A kinship where a flickering flame in one is rekindled by blazing fire in another. I have known about, and admired, NCEF's work for a long time through friends who have volunteered. When those friends asked me if I would be interested in joining the board, kinship was an obvious enticement. In addition, I felt that my experiences of working in Nepal had provided me insights that would be valuable to the organization while the memories are still fresh and ruminations alive.
