Trip to Amusement Park
Date: June 21st, 2003
Prepared by: Kanti Shrestha
June 21, 2003, a Saturday,
turned ou excitement, innocence and keenness which they had suppressed for all but an
approximate fifteen minutes!
Kids bumping against one another's cars and enjoying every
minute of it.
Motor-bikes--- not merely fascination with young studs.
Small boys love it too!
The volunteers and the
parents could do nothing else but smile and wonder. It was sheer joy watching
the children so happy and excited. They would run from one ride to another
without a breather. And, us, volunteers would have to run after them.
Certainly, a welcome exercise for all of us. Our NCEF children appeared to be
exploring the wonders that this small amusement park had to offer them in
their own special ways like Alice in her wonderland.
Little Kumar just out of bed, but taking the ride in smiles
and successfully
Adults only!!! Volunteers along with the parents taking a
break from the kids.
From the Top-- Parent - Ritu - Kanti -Ruma.
Parent - Anita - Jyoti - Nabina.
Remaining parents.
Hungry.Thirsty. Exhausted. Food be the source of relaxation.
After two hours of exploration, the kids finally tired a little. Refreshments
were handed out. We had a small reflection session in the end where the kids
shared their reflections on the day. Some time after 1 pm, it was decided to
call it a day at the amusement park. The children, volunteers as well as the
parents left the park exhausted but with sparkling eyes, happy smiles and
pleased hearts. t to be a delightful and fun-filled experience for the children
sponsored by NCEF since they had a date with the wonders of the tiny world by
the name of DRAGON WORLD in a universe called Kathmandu. The vibes of the
childhood innocence, purity and sincere joy had a hold on the grown-up parents
and volunteers of NCEF as well.
Entrance to the Dragon World. Expectant and happy child
countenances along with the volunteers and parents.
That morning, all the
volunteers of NCEF/Nepal started off early in spite of the day being a
Saturday. Volunteers had dutifully taken upon the responsibility of directing
the children and the parents to the amusement park by 11 am sharp.
Accordingly, volunteers arrived with different groups of children and parents
outside the park by 10.30 am. It was a rather noisy picture outside the gates
at that hour of the morning with the cheers, laughter and sometimes even
crying of the eleven children namely, Rajkumar, Ujeli, Krishna, Santosh, Bijay,
Kumar, Ojina, Sumaiya, Ansu, Suraj and Sudip. Five NCEF/Nepal volunteers-
Anita, Nabina, Jyoti, Ritu and Kanti along with Ruma were trying to keep
things under control till the gates would open at 11 am.
The kids simply thrilled at getting to drive and go
bumper-to-bumper without their driver's licenses!
The first session of the day- The Introduction Session where
each student was asked to introduce himself/herself and tell everyone
something about themselves.
The clock struck 11 am. The gates opened. Then, the group of twenty two
entered the world of merry and laughter through the Dragon's mouth, itself. On
reaching broad day light one more time, we had an introductory session where
the children along with the parents and volunteers introduced themselves in
their own unique ways. This session certainly assisted in breaking the ice
especially amongst the children. The moment the session was over, one could
see some of the kids holding hands and talking to one another.
Two fourth standard kids Ojina and Sumaiya kindling a new
friendship...
Mother of Bijaya[ a NCEF sponsored boy] living the moment
with the kids in the merry-go-round.
Each child was purchased a
100 rupees ticket which would give them access to all the games available at
the amusement park. The children were all mannered and quiet till then. Alas!
It wasn't to last. The first ride seemed to have rejuvenated all the childhood
excitement, innocence and keenness which they had suppressed for all but an
approximate fifteen minutes!
