About Nepal

Nepal: Set in the Himalayas between India and China, Nepal is home to 24 million people. The 2003 UN Human Development Report ranked Nepal number 143 out of 173 nations, indicating a strong need for development in health, the economy and education.

Government: The monarchy introduced parliamentary government in 1951, and 1990 reforms created a multiparty democracy. For the last few years, Maoist groups have threatened the government and the public schools. These threats, along with actual violence, have caused months of disruption in public services. NCEF work, however, goes on.

Development: One of the poorest countries in the world, Nepal's PPP-based GDP per capita was US$1310 in 2001. Nepal has 30.4% adult literacy, and 61.6% child literacy. The education outlook has shown a promising trend over the last twenty years, but there is still a great deal of work to be done.
